Harnessing the Reactivity of Alkynes: Construction of Small Organic Molecules of Pharmaceutical Interest

Professor Akhilesh K. Verma from the University of Delhi will present a seminar.

Harnessing the Reactivity of Alkynes: Construction of Small Organic Moleculesof Pharmaceutical Interest

Abstract:
The simplicity, efficiency, and generality of reactions using alkyneshave led to its applications in the synthesis of a wide variety of small organic moleculesand natural products. Developing synthetic strategiesforsmall molecules in terms of selectivity, operational simplicity, functional group tolerance, and environmental sustainability isin constant demand as the majority of drugs; drug-like compounds contain hetero atomsat their core. In continuation of our interest in the synthesis of small organic molecules using alkyneschemistry, we have successfully engineered the synthesis of a variety of biologically important scaffolds using hydroamination/electrophilic cyclization/annulation of alkyne chemistry. In this presentation I would like to discuss some recent results in this chemistryas well as application of online MS in the mechanistic identification of organic reactions.

BioSketch:
Prof. Verma received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Chemistry, University of Delhi. He joined Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Center for Biomedical Research, University of Delhi, as a Lecturer on 2ndFeb 1998 and later moved to the Department of Chemistry as aReader on 23rdJan 2009; he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2010 and became full Professor in 2013. He also served School of Physical Sciences, JNU for nearly one year (2015). He did his postdoctoral research work from 2001 to 2002 (two years) withProf. Alan R. Katritzky at the University of Florida USA, and also worked as visiting Scientist from 28th June 2007 to 31stAugust 2008 at Iowa State University of Science and Technology, Ames, Iowa, USA in the Laboratory of Prof. Richard C. Larock. Prof.Vermahas guided 32 Ph.D. students and published more than 132 research papers (h-Index:40, I-index: 91; Citation: 5212).
