Dr. Blewitt’s area of instructional interest lies in the design of unique courses and laboratory programs. He has designed and taught chemistry and several science courses for non-science students. He also is interested in environmentally oriented instruction for both science and non-science students. He has had the opportunity to implement many of these efforts through the New College program at the University. His major research interests are in the area of nitrogen heterocyclic chemistry. Many of the compounds studied are structurally related to the purines and have thus proven to be of medical and biological interest. Within this framework most of his efforts have involved studies on thepolyazaindenes. These include such compounds as indolizine, imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine pyrazolo[2,3-a]pyridine and imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine. Most of the research efforts have attempted to understand the nature of the chemical reactivity of these medicinally interesting compounds. Also, of special interest are the nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of these and related heterocyclic molecules.
