Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry faculty are available to give virtual seminars at your college or university this fall. A  full list of available faculty with seminar topics can be found on the seminar request page.  An introduction to our graduate program in Chemistry & Biochemistry can also be included in the seminar, if desired. If interested, please fill out the survey and we will get back to you to schedule the seminar. Dr. Timkovich retires

Dr. Russell Timkovich has retired from the university after a 35 year career at UA.  Dr. Timkovich earned his BS degree at Michigan State University and his PhD at CalTech.  He began his academic career as an assistant professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1975.  He was recruited to The University of Alabama in 1985 as an associate professor and was promoted to full professor in 1990.  Dr. Timkovich’s research focused on the structure and mechanism of operation […]

Welcome to Dr. Igor Fedin

The Department is pleased to welcome Dr. Igor Fedin as an assistant professor in physical chemistry.  Dr. Fedin most recently served as a postdoctoral research associate at Los Alamos National Laboratory.  He earned his BS degree at Kiev National University and a PhD at the University of Chicago.  His research interests encompass programmable colloidal nanoscale materials for single-photon sources, imaging, energy applications, and biological applications.

Dr. Metzger retires

Professor Robert M. Metzger has retired from the department, where he has served as a professor of Chemistry and Materials Science since 1986. He was born of Hungarian parents in Yokohama, Japan and educated in Merano, Italy, He received his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1962, where he worked with Willard F. UA GSE chapter recognized

The Delta Beta chapter of Gamma Sigma Epsilon (GSE) at UA was recognized as the longest continuously active chapter during the recent biennial national GSE meeting that celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of GSE.  The UA GSE chapter was founded in 1924, only five years after the initial chapter was established at Davidson College in 1919.  GSE is a national honor society for chemistry and chemical engineering majors and minors that recognized students who have excelled in the […]

UA to host 2020 SURC Conference

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry will host the 52nd Southeastern Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC) on January 24-25, 2020.  The SURC is open to all undergraduate researchers in chemistry in the southeastern region.  Students can present oral or poster presentations, with prizes awarded for the best talks and posters.  Dr. Mark Griep from the University of Nebraska will give the keynote lecture entitled, “Everything I Know About Chemistry, I Learned at the Movies.”  Abstracts can be submitted at the SURC […]
