Introducing the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

The Department is pleased to officially announce that the Board of Trustees has approved changing our name to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.  Biochemistry has long been an integral component of the research and teaching mission of the department and plays a vital role in modern chemical research.  Our name change highlights this integral role for biochemical research at UA in the Department.

NSF Grant to Fund New MALDI-TOF Instrument

The NSF has announced it will fund a proposal entitled, “MRI:  Acquisition of a high performance matrix-assisted laser ionization dual time-of-flight (MALDI/TOF-TOF) mass spectrometer (MS),” through the Major Research Implementation program.  The proposal led by Dr. Carolyn Cassady will provide funds to purchase a state of the art MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer.  The MALDI-TOF instrument will be part of the department’s Mass Spectrometry facility.  MALDI-TOF allows molecular weight characterization of non-volatile compounds, such as biomolecules and polymers.  The instrument will support […]

Prof. Arduengo Teaches UA Students About Wine Production in Germany

Prof. Anthony Arduengo, Saxson Professor of Chemistry, lead a study abroad program for UA students to study chemistry and perform in research in Germany.  Included in the class offerings was a class in oenology, the study of winemaking.  The class was offered in conjunction with Johannes Gutenberg Universität-Mainz in Rheingau, Germany, one of Germany’s designated wine regions.  Arts & Sciences press release.

Dr. Allred Receives DOE Early Career Research Grant

Dr. Jared Allred has received a 5 year, $750,000 Department of Energy Early Career research grant from the Office of Basic Energy Science and the DOE EPSCOR program.  Dr. Allred’s proposal entitled, “Investigation of Short‐Range Ordering in Transition Metal Compounds by Diffuse Scattering,” was one of 59 proposals selected for funding from over 700 submissions.  The DOE Early Career Research Program supports the development of individual research programs of outstanding scientists early in their careers and stimulates research careers in […]

Dr. Matthew Thompson Joins the Faculty

The Department of Chemistry is pleased to announce that Dr. Matthew Thompson will join the faculty as an assistant professor in biochemistry.  Dr. Thompson received his PhD in physical chemistry and biophysics at North Carolina State under the direction of Dr. Stefan Franzen.  He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University with Dr. Walter Chazin.  Dr. Thompson’s research will focus on strategies to combat antibiotic resistance and studies of the mechanism for electron transfer in DNA processing enzymes.
