Dr. Bakker receives NSF grant

Dr. Martin Bakker and Dr. James Harris have received a $520,000 grant entitled: “spectroscopic and kinetic interrogation of organometallic complexes encapsulated in zeolites for gas-phase alkane oxidation catalysis,” from the National Science Foundation. The project seeks to understand the pathways by which phthalocyanines isolated into the cages of zeolites catalyze oxidation reactions.

Dr. Dunkle Promoted

The Provost has announced that Dr. Jack Dunkle will be promoted to associate professor with tenure effect on August 16, 2021.  Dr. Dunkle’s group uses biochemical and structural biology tools to explore the role of RNA in expressing and regulating genetic information.  Dr. Dunkle’s research has been supported by NIH.

Dr. Snowden receives NIH grant

Dr. Tim Snowden is part of team that has received an NIH R21 grant entitled, “A New Paradigm for HIV Treatment: Targeted Degradation of HIV Reverse Transcriptase via the Ubiquitin-Proteasome Pathway.”  The $430,000 project is being led by Dr. Robert Reynolds at UAB, and includes co-investigators at UAB and the University Miami, in addition to UA.  The project seeks to explore new molecules that will bind to and destroy the HIV Reverse Transcriptase enzyme.  If successful, this technology will overcome […]

Bioscience REU program accepting applicants

Dr. Ghosh receives Prestigious NIH R35 grant.

Dr. Ayanjeet Ghosh has received an early investigator Maximizing Investigator Research Award (MIRA, R35) from NIH.  With the $1.8 million award, Dr. Ghosh will seek to understand how the misfolding and aggregation of amyloid proteins is related to pathogenesis in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.  Dr. Ghosh’s project will investigate the heterogeneities in protein secondary structure in amyloid aggregates both in-vitro and ex-vivo and identify their relationship with disease progression. Dr. Timkovich retires

Dr. Russell Timkovich has retired from the university after a 35 year career at UA.  Dr. Timkovich earned his BS degree at Michigan State University and his PhD at CalTech.  He began his academic career as an assistant professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1975.  He was recruited to The University of Alabama in 1985 as an associate professor and was promoted to full professor in 1990.  Dr. Timkovich’s research focused on the structure and mechanism of operation […]

Welcome to Dr. Igor Fedin

The Department is pleased to welcome Dr. Igor Fedin as an assistant professor in physical chemistry.  Dr. Fedin most recently served as a postdoctoral research associate at Los Alamos National Laboratory.  He earned his BS degree at Kiev National University and a PhD at the University of Chicago.  His research interests encompass programmable colloidal nanoscale materials for single-photon sources, imaging, energy applications, and biological applications.
