UA Company Receives NSF Small Business Grant
ThruPore Technologies, a company started by Prof. Martin Bakker and Dr. Franchessa Sayler (PhD 2013), has received a $150,000 NSF grant to help commercialize technology developed by Prof. Bakker and Dr. Sayler. The grant will fund the development of new solid-supported catalysts for industrial processes. Prof. Kevin Shaughnessy is a co-PI on the grant and will direct the catalyst testing at UA.
Dr. Gupta to Receive CRSI Medal
Dr. Arunava Gupta will receive the Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) Medal at the CSRI meeting in February 2014. The CRSI medal is given to chemists of Indian origin working outside of India in recognition of the extensive contributions to chemical research.
Dixon Leads Computational Study of Nuclear Fuels
Dr. David Dixon is leading an effort that has been awarded 250 million process hours at Oak Ridge National Lab and Argonne National Lab to carry out theoretical understanding of the processing and clean up of nuclear fuels.

Steven Kelley Places 2nd in 3MT Competition
Steven Kelley placed second in the UA Three-Minute Thesis competition. His talk entitled, “A Study of Covalency in Actinides and Lanthanides using N-Donor Ionic Liquids” describes his dissertation research in Prof. Robin Rogers’s lab. Also competing in the finals were Greg Dye (Prof. Street) and Joseph Meany (Prof. Woski).
Prof. Busenlehner has “Paper of the Week” in JBC
A paper co-authored by Prof. Laura Busenlehner entitled, “Escherichia coli SufE Sulfur Transfer Protein Modulates the SufS Cysteine Desulfurase through Allosteric Conformational Dynamics,” was selected as a “Paper of the Week” by the editors of the Journal of Biological Chemistry. The paper describes work done in collaboration with Prof. Wayne Outten from the University of South Carolina. Gregory Dye, Joseph Meany, and Steven Kelley were selected as finalists in the University Three-Minute Thesis competition. They will compete in the finals on Wednesday 11/20 at 6:00 in 159 Russell Hall.

Dr. Mier An Receives A&S Outstanding Dissertation Award
Congratulations to Dr. Mier An who was selected as one of three recipients of the College of Arts & Sciences Outstanding Dissertation Award for her dissertation entitled “Inhibition of an E.coli Glycosylase, MutM, by Non-native Metals.” Dr. An’s dissertation will be considered for the University-wide Outstanding Dissertation Award.
